Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I just want to write this letter to give my appreciation with regards to my recent cookery course. It really played a huge role not just on the development of my skills, it also helped the relationship I have with my family and other people.
Before cookery course, my I was different. My life was all about me. On how I survive my day to day life, buying foods outside because basically I didn't know how to cook. But after finishing the course, I make most of my foods from breakfast to dinner almost everyday. Not just that, I got more closer to other people around me as well because I get to give them the food that I made, and they really liked it.
What I liked about the course was it didn't gave me any pressure during my learning. I was able to enjoy it instead because the instructors were very friendly and inclusive. I also enjoyed making empanadas, and was also able to learn the different ingredients that I could possibly add on it.
Your course really helped me a lot, and I would love to join another course that you would offer such as making Embutido recipe. Thank you very much for your time reading this letter, and I would appreciate receiving a feedback regarding the courses that your about to offer.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requested points and maintains a clear, appreciative purpose. You explain what you enjoyed, especially the friendly and inclusive instructors and making empanadas; you also describe cooking nearly every day since the course and sharing food with others. The suggestion of an embutido course is relevant and specific. These details extend the main ideas and make the feedback personal. To strengthen the response further, develop the proposed course a little more—for example, explain what techniques or dishes you would like it to cover. The closing request for information about future courses also supports the letter’s purpose.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The information is arranged in a generally logical sequence: you introduce your appreciation, describe changes since the course, explain what you enjoyed, and finish with a suggestion and closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these points, and links such as “But after finishing the course” and “Not just that” show how ideas relate. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. The opening moves quickly from skill development to relationships, while “Before cookery course” begins a new paragraph without a fully clear transition. The repeated use of “and” also makes parts of the final paragraph feel crowded. Use clearer transitions and separate the course suggestion from the closing request to make progression more polished.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the course experience and its effects, including “instructors,” “inclusive,” “ingredients,” and “empanadas.” These specific terms make the letter relevant and personal. However, several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, such as “give my appreciation,” “played a huge role,” and “get more closer.” Repetition of general words such as “course,” “food,” and “helped” also limits flexibility. Aim for more natural collocations and precise wording, particularly in a formal letter: for instance, say that you are writing to “express my appreciation” and that the course “improved my cooking skills.” Check spelling and capitalization of dish names as well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts a mix of simple and longer sentences, including clauses with “because” and “not just…but also,” and the main message remains understandable. However, errors occur across the response and sometimes make sentences difficult to follow. Examples include “Before cookery course, my I was different,” the incorrect past form in “it didn’t gave me,” and “I would appreciate receiving a feedback.” There are also tense and agreement inconsistencies, such as “I make” after “after finishing” and “I get to give” within a past-tense account. Practise forming past-tense narratives consistently, removing duplicated subjects, and checking articles and verb forms. Breaking some long sentences into shorter, complete clauses would improve control.
