Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter about the short cookery course which I have completed in your institution. The chef who taught me about cooking he explained very well. His way of teaching was excellent. He has teached me different varities of food such as Italian, Turkish, Indian and so on. I enjoyed alot in my cooking class. I have done different types of soups, curries in my course. He also explained about baking such as cakes, deserts, donuts etc. My overall experience about cooking course was so good and satisfactory. I would suggest you to add about American food in your cooking classes which would help to enhance the more skills among students. I would recommend to all my friends and realtives who wants to learn cooking just enroll themselves in your institution. I would say thank you for this course.

Regards

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You give relevant feedback about the course and suggest a future option, mentioning the chef’s teaching, the range of cuisines, and American food. However, the task’s three points are not all addressed clearly: you describe what you enjoyed, but you do not say how much cooking you have done since completing the course. Instead, “I have done different types of soups, curries in my course” refers to activities during the course. Your recommendation of American food is relevant, but the reason it would benefit students is only briefly stated. To strengthen the letter, clearly describe your cooking since the course and develop your suggestion with a specific example of what the new course could teach.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The letter has a recognisable opening, a sequence of comments about the course, a suggestion, and a closing, so the reader can follow its general purpose. However, most information is placed in one long paragraph, and the ideas move quickly from the teacher to dishes, baking, a course suggestion, and a recommendation to friends. This limits the overall progression and makes the feedback feel like a list. Some links are also unclear: “I have done different types of soups, curries in my course” does not clearly connect course activities with cooking after the course. Use separate paragraphs for course feedback, cooking since the course, and your suggestion, with clear transitions between them.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “cookery course,” “curries,” “baking,” and “American food.” There are also attempts at more specific language, such as naming several cuisines and types of food. However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations are unnatural, including “enjoyed alot in my cooking class,” “enhance the more skills,” and “my overall experience about cooking course.” Spelling errors such as “varities,” “deserts,” and “realtives” are noticeable. Aim for more natural phrases and check spelling carefully; for example, say that you “enjoyed the classes” and that a course could “help students develop their skills.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You communicate using mostly simple sentences, with a few attempts to add detail through clauses and lists. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences awkward or difficult to process. For example, “The chef who taught me about cooking he explained very well” repeats the subject, while “He has teached me” uses an incorrect past participle. The sentence about cooking soups and curries also lacks a clear grammatical structure. Practise forming accurate relative clauses and using past-tense forms consistently. For instance: “The chef explained everything clearly, and I have cooked several soups and curries since the course.”
