Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

Hope you are in good health!

I'm writing this letter to let you know that how thankful I am for joining cookery classes offered and sponsered by you and team. I joined in this summer vacation 2 months session. There was so much to learn and execute. I'm speechless about how much I enjoyed learning cooking as well as meeting new people from different ethnicity. Blessed to have some genuine new friends from the same group.

furthermore, I would like to share that since the classes ended I have been cooking plenty of delicious and different meals for my family and believe they can't get enough of praising my cooking skills.

Also, I would like to make a suggestion for school to introduce in next session which is Bakery classes or culinary classes so that it can be an add to our repotoir and will get to learn something more.

Appreciate and greatful for the opportunity.

Sincerely.

Nooru

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you describe enjoying the classes and meeting people, explain that you have cooked many meals for your family since they ended, and suggest bakery or culinary classes. The purpose of the letter is clear and the ideas are relevant. The enjoyment point is the most developed, with details about learning and making friends; the amount of cooking and the proposed course are less specific. For example, “plenty of delicious and different meals” could be supported with a brief example, and the suggestion could explain what kind of baking course you have in mind. This covers the task well overall, but fuller development and a more precise course proposal would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a generally clear sequence: it opens with thanks, describes the course, moves to cooking afterwards, and ends with a suggestion and sign-off. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these points, and “furthermore” and “Also” signal transitions. However, some links feel mechanical, and the opening paragraph combines several ideas without a clear progression. The final paragraph also joins the suggestion and its expected benefit in a way that is difficult to follow. Use clearer paragraphing for each task point and connect ideas through their meaning rather than relying mainly on transition words. The overall organisation is coherent, though cohesion and progression are not consistently smooth.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of relevant expressions, including “genuine new friends,” “delicious and different meals,” and “cooking skills,” so the message is understandable and suited to the topic. There are also attempts at more expressive language, such as “I’m speechless,” but some choices are unnatural or imprecise in this formal letter. “Joining cookery classes offered and sponsored by you and team” is awkward, while “an add to our repotoir” appears to misuse and misspell the intended word. “Greatful” is also misspelled, and “culinary classes” is too broad to identify a specific course. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and check spelling; precise terms such as “baking course” would communicate your suggestion more clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the main message can generally be followed. However, some grammatical errors remain, including “let you know that how thankful I am,” where the clause structure is incorrect, and “I joined in this summer vacation 2 months session,” which lacks a clear grammatical construction. “Since the classes ended I have been cooking” would also benefit from a comma after the introductory clause. The closing fragment “Appreciate and greatful for the opportunity” is not a complete sentence. Practise forming complete clauses and checking word order, articles, and punctuation, while retaining your attempts to combine related ideas. More consistent control would make the letter easier to read.
