IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently did a short cookery course. The cookery school has asked for your feedback on this course. Write a letter to the course director at the cookery school. In your letter
- describe what you enjoyed about the course
- say how much cooking you've done since the course
- suggest another cookery course you’d like the school to offer
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to provide feedback on the short cookery course I recently attended at your school.
It was two month course and enjoyed every class. Firstly, experienced and supportive instructors were made friendly learning environment in the classroom. They provided practical cooking sessions rather than only theoretical lessons. I learnt new recipes and different cooking techniques.
I cooked almost every day since completing the course. I tried several new recipes at home and everyone enjoyed it. I gained confidence and improved my cooking skills. Whenever we arrange small get together at home I am preparing food for family and friends.
I will appreciate it if you offer an advanced bakery and pastry making course. In this you can add cake decoration, bread making, desserts and so on. The another important thing is hands-on training with professional equipment.
Thank you for providing such a valuable learning experience. I look forward to attending course in the future.
Yours sincerely,
Kiran

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You address all three requested points and maintain a suitable, appreciative tone for a letter to the course director. You explain that you enjoyed the supportive instructors, practical sessions and new recipes, then describe cooking almost every day and preparing food for family and friends. Your suggestion of an advanced bakery and pastry course is relevant, with useful examples such as cake decoration and bread making. These ideas are clear and generally supported, though some details remain broad: for example, you could name a particular recipe or explain what made the practical sessions especially effective. The request for a future course is clear, but a little more explanation of who it would suit or what learners would gain would make the ideas more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear overall progression: it introduces the purpose, discusses the course, describes your cooking afterwards, and ends with a suggestion and polite closing. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these points, and transitions such as “Firstly” and “Thank you” make the structure easy to follow. The sequence within each paragraph is also generally logical. To make the cohesion more flexible and natural, avoid relying on simple sequencing and repeated sentence openings. For instance, the cooking paragraph could connect your increased confidence directly to the occasions when you prepare food. The phrase “In this” also has an unclear reference; naming the proposed course again would make the link between the suggestion and its components more precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the topic and communicates the main ideas, with relevant terms such as “cooking techniques,” “hands-on training,” and “professional equipment.” You also attempt more specific language when listing “cake decoration, bread making, desserts.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “made friendly learning environment,” “small get together,” and “The another important thing.” “Advanced bakery and pastry making course” is understandable but could be expressed more naturally as an advanced baking and pastry course. Greater precision in describing the course and your cooking experiences, alongside more accurate collocations, would strengthen the range and control of your vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple sentences and longer structures, and the message remains clear throughout. Some sentences are well controlled, such as “I tried several new recipes at home and everyone enjoyed it.” However, there are some errors in articles, agreement and verb forms. For example, “It was two month course” needs an article and a plural noun, while “instructors were made friendly learning environment” has an incorrect verb construction and is missing an article. “Whenever we arrange small get together at home I am preparing food” also needs more accurate article use and tense choice. Review these patterns and check sentence punctuation, especially around introductory clauses. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve grammatical control.
