Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to express my admiration for your outstanding performance at the musical concert I attended last saturday. Your exceptional vocal range, stage performance and ability to connect with the audience made the evening truly unforgettable.
I have been very passionate about music since childhood and have been actively involved in various musical activities. I play guitar and keyboard, and i also enjoy singing at local cultural events. I recently started composing my own songs, Although i feel that my technical knowledge and songwriting skills still need a lot of improvement.
Because of your extensive experience in the music industry, I would be extremely greatful if you could offer me some guidance. In particular, i would love if i get an opportunity to attend your workshop or to receive some private lessons. Your advice on vocals, music composition and performing confidently in front of crowd would be invaluable.
Thank you for your contribution in the music industry and to inspire the people like me. i sincerly hope to hear back from you.
yours sincerely,
Manjot

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
You address all three points clearly and appropriately for a letter to a performer. Your admiration is specific, mentioning his “exceptional vocal range” and ability to connect with the audience; you also describe playing guitar and keyboard, singing at local events, and composing songs. The request for help is concrete: you ask about a workshop or private lessons and identify areas where guidance would help. These details make the purpose clear and the ideas well developed. To make the response even more complete, you could add a little more about your current musical goals or the kind of support you hope to receive, rather than relying mainly on a general request for guidance. The tone is suitably respectful throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The letter has a clear progression: you introduce your reason for writing, describe your musical background, make a request, and close with thanks. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking phrases such as “Because of your extensive experience” and “In particular” help connect the request to its explanation. The reader can follow the message without difficulty. Some transitions could be smoother: the move from your songwriting to the request is quite abrupt, and the final thanks and hope to hear back could be connected more naturally. Check spacing after full stops, as in “guidance. In particular,” since this interrupts the otherwise clear presentation. More varied, natural links between ideas would make the organisation feel more polished.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You use a good range of relevant vocabulary, including “admiration,” “exceptional vocal range,” “actively involved,” “composing,” and “invaluable.” These choices suit a respectful letter and communicate your musical interests precisely. There are occasional problems with spelling and natural word combinations, such as “greatful,” “sincerly,” and “contribution in the music industry.” “I would love if I get an opportunity” is also an awkward expression; a more natural phrase would be “I would love the opportunity.” Aim to check spelling carefully and learn common collocations as complete phrases. This would make your vocabulary sound more consistently fluent and idiomatic while preserving the strong range already shown.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “Your exceptional vocal range … made the evening truly unforgettable” and the conditional request beginning “I would be extremely grateful if…”. Meaning remains clear, but some grammatical and punctuation errors prevent consistently accurate control. For example, “Although i feel…” is incorrectly capitalised and attached to the preceding sentence; it should begin a new sentence or be joined with appropriate punctuation. In “I would love if i get an opportunity,” the verb pattern and tense need revision, for example, “I would love it if I could get the opportunity.” Capitalise “I” throughout, and use consistent sentence boundaries. These corrections would strengthen accuracy while retaining your range.
