IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently went to a concert and thought one of the singers was very good. You want to tell him how you feel. Write a letter to the singer. In your letter
- say how you feel about his performance
- give details of your musical activities
- explain how you would like him to help you with your musical activities
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear .................. ,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am excited to express that I really enjoyed the event, especially your melancholic words for the brokenhearted persons. The way you indulge the audience in the situation that you are describing in your words deserves a high praise.
I'm too much in the musical field, and joined the musical institute, where you are graduated from. Once during an university event, I voluntarily performed at the stage and the feedback was unbelievable. Almost every family gathering demands me to end up it by playing guitar or singing a charming song.
I am eager to learn more about musical instruments from you. I would be glad if you could train me for and upcoming event next month in my university. It would be overwhelming for me to grace the occasion. It would be desperate for me if I miss the chance to steal the show.
Best Regard,
Muhammad Kaif Ali

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three points: you praise the singer’s performance, describe your musical involvement, and ask for help preparing for a university event. The response is relevant and your request is understandable. However, some points are less fully developed than others. The praise is specific in mentioning the “melancholic words” and the way the singer engages the audience, while your musical experience is described mainly through brief examples. The request for training would be clearer if you specified which instrument or skills you want to work on and what kind of support you are seeking. A more suitable greeting and sign-off would also make the letter feel more directly addressed to the singer.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: appreciation comes first, your musical background follows, and the request appears in the final paragraph. This progression makes the purpose easy to follow, and paragraphing helps distinguish the task points. Some links between ideas are less smooth, however. For example, “I'm too much in the musical field” moves abruptly into your institute and performance experience, while “Once during an university event” introduces an example without a particularly clear connection to the preceding sentence. The final paragraph also shifts quickly from asking for training to describing the event and your wish to “steal the show.” Use clearer transitions and connect each example explicitly to your request to make the progression more fluent.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for the letter, including expressive choices such as “melancholic,” “brokenhearted,” and “grace the occasion.” These help convey enthusiasm and admiration. There are also several inaccurate or unnatural word combinations that make the language less precise: “indulge the audience in the situation,” “a high praise,” and “end up it” do not express your intended meanings naturally. “Desperate” is also not the right word for saying you would value an opportunity, and “Best Regard” is an inaccurate sign-off. Aim for natural collocations and check whether a less common word fits the context before using it. More precise phrasing would strengthen the message without losing its warm tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, including the relative clause in “the situation that you are describing” and the conditional request, “I would be glad if you could train me.” Meaning is generally clear, and the errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your purpose. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, particularly with articles, verb forms, and sentence construction. Examples include “an university event,” “where you are graduated from,” and “train me for and upcoming event.” The sentence beginning “Almost every family gathering demands me” also has an awkward grammatical pattern. Review article use and verb patterns, and read each sentence aloud to check that its subject and verb fit together naturally.
