Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Arjan,

Recently, I attended your music concert in saskatoon. Your performance is outstanding in term of music composition, historical lyrics in music and way of singing music in high vocals. you are extreme ahead of your time in every aspect. Your music feels devotional, modern and classic style of singing, such as sandalbar, last weapon and no shortcut songs.

Although, i have knowledge of some instruments like guitar, harmonium and sitar. Sometimes, i sing in festivals with my friends. last year, i got annual award from my collage in playing classical music.

I know that helping someone directly is not as easy as we think, basically, i need some kind of advertisement from you. If you post my music post that will be very helpful to get public exposure. Therefore, this will help me to get music concert like you. maybe, i will perform music activities

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt, which is positive. However, the response is slightly under the 150-word minimum, which impacts the overall development of your ideas. While you mention your musical background and your request for help, the explanation of how you would like him to help you is a bit abrupt and lacks detail. To improve, ensure you fully expand on your ideas to meet the length requirement and provide a more natural, polite tone suitable for a formal letter to a professional artist. The final sentence is also incomplete, which leaves the task feeling unfinished.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your structure. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'Although' and 'Therefore' to link ideas. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes mechanical, and the transition between your musical activities and the request for help feels sudden. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your sentences flow more naturally into one another. The ending is particularly disjointed due to the incomplete final sentence, which disrupts the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'composition', 'devotional', and 'exposure'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'extreme ahead of your time' (should be 'extremely') and 'get music concert like you'. There are also minor errors in word formation and usage throughout the text. To improve, try to use more precise adjectives and ensure that your word choices are grammatically correct within the context of the sentence. Expanding your range of synonyms will also help you express your admiration more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'Your performance is outstanding in term of' (should be 'terms'), 'i have knowledge' (should be 'I'), and 'my collage' (should be 'college'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of capital letters for 'I'. The final sentence is a fragment, which significantly impacts the accuracy of your writing. To improve, focus on basic subject-verb agreement, consistent capitalisation, and ensuring that every sentence is complete with a clear subject and verb.
