Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Ed Shereen,

Hopefully, you are doing well. I want to bring this in your notice, I am such a big fan of your singing and you are such an inspiration for aspiring singers like me.

I recently attended your concert which was held on last Saturday at Bakingo stadium, London. I reached the stadium and it was full in its all capacity and people were screaming your name aloud with happy faces. Although whole band altogether was so good but I was overwhelmed when you start singing that love song, it immediately made me recall some of my most loved moments in my life.

I am passionate for music and I sing along with playing guitar in my college band. I want to pursue music as my career and I am blessed with supporting parents.

Although I do get lots of praise for my singing but I miss some guitar notes whenever I play for longer duration. It's bit tricky for me sometimes to handle both at the same time. I want to be fluent like you, that is playing guitar and singing with an ease. Can you help me with bringing calmness in my music.

I am hoping this letter finds you well. Do get back to me whenever you get a chance.

Best Regards,

Vaishali Wadhwa

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly express your feelings about the concert, describe your musical background, and explain how you would like the singer to assist you. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the description of the concert experience and your personal musical struggles. To reach a higher band, ensure that the request for help is slightly more specific, as 'bringing calmness' is a bit abstract. However, the task is fully covered.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Although,' 'I recently,' and 'In addition,' to link your thoughts. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother in the second paragraph. The use of referencing is generally clear, and the overall structure is appropriate for a formal letter format.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'aspiring,' 'overwhelmed,' and 'passionate.' These choices are appropriate for the context. There are some minor errors in collocation, such as 'bring this in your notice' (should be 'bring this to your notice') and 'full in its all capacity' (should be 'at full capacity'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the use of vocabulary from reaching the highest band. Expanding your range of idiomatic expressions or more precise collocations would further improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Although whole band altogether was so good but I was overwhelmed...' and 'I want to be fluent like you, that is playing guitar and singing with an ease.' There are some grammatical slips, such as 'when you start singing' (should be 'started') and 'It's bit tricky' (missing 'a'). Additionally, the sentence structure 'Although... but...' is redundant; you should use one or the other. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and you show a good command of sentence variety.
