Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Rocky,
Hopefully, you and other singers are doing well. I attended your concert last week at scotia arena. It was truly an unforgettable event.
I would like to mention here, I am totally amazed about your performance. To this day, I could not believe that I got that opportunity of attending that concert.
The purpose of this letter is to let you know that music is very important part of my life. Since high school I have been singing in annual functions and charity events. Moreover, right now I am working as a music teacher in Bayshore public school.
It would be really great help if I could get an opportunity to sing or rehearse with your band members. It is my lifelong wish to become an artist like you and sing for big crowd.
I am hoping this letter finds you well. Do get back to me whenever you get a chance. Talk to you soon!
Best Regards,
Karan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly express your admiration for the performance, describe your background as a music teacher and performer, and explain your request to rehearse with the band. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer, maintaining a respectful and enthusiastic register throughout. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the task requirements. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific detail about your musical activities, such as the genre of music you teach or the types of instruments you play, to further flesh out your personal narrative.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each bullet point, and a closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'The purpose of this letter is to', which help the flow of information. However, the transition between the introduction and the second paragraph is slightly abrupt. To improve, you could use more varied linking words or phrases to connect your sentences more fluidly, ensuring that the progression of ideas feels more natural and less like a list of separate points.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'unforgettable event', 'lifelong wish', and 'charity events'. The language is generally natural and conveys your meaning clearly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'amazed about' (should be 'amazed by') and 'big crowd' (should be 'a large audience' or 'a large crowd'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your message effectively, incorporating more precise collocations and a slightly wider variety of descriptive adjectives would help elevate the lexical quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'I could not believe that I got that opportunity' (should be 'I cannot believe' or 'I could not have believed'), and 'It would be really great help' (should be 'a great help'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization errors, such as 'scotia arena' (should be 'Scotia Arena') and 'music is very important part' (should be 'a very important part'). Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. Increasing your control over articles and verb tenses will help improve your accuracy.
