Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing this letter to tell your about the last concert I attended.
Last sunday, I attended a concert in south hall in downtown winnipeg, where you perform outstanding. Actually I really love to go concert, as I love music and I am doing music activities at home.If I am talking about the performance it was awesome, it is full of energy and passion.
As, I told earlier, I am playing guitar and I learned this in from my school .In addition to it, I am composting songs with my friends. Actually, my friends and me made a band and we are doing performance in some functions .
I want to do work with you as I am keen to learn a lot of things. I know it is difficult but please give me one opportunity, I will show my talent.
I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Your faithfully,
Harshdeep Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter covers all three bullet points: your feelings about the performance, your musical background, and your request for help. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention playing guitar and composing, you could have provided more specific details about your musical style or the types of songs you compose to make the request more persuasive. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a performer, though the opening 'Dear Sir/Madam' is slightly formal given the context of writing to a specific singer you admire. Overall, the task is addressed, but the ideas could be expanded for a more natural flow.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your ideas. You use some cohesive devices like 'In addition to it' and 'As I told earlier' to connect your thoughts. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The progression of ideas is clear, but the connection between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition between your musical activities and the request for help is a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'this', 'it') is always clear will help improve the flow of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'outstanding', 'passion', and 'opportunity'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'doing music activities' (should be 'involved in musical activities') and 'composting songs' (should be 'composing'). Additionally, 'do work with you' is slightly unnatural; 'collaborate with you' would be more precise. While your meaning is always clear, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and lacks the precision required for higher band scores. Focusing on learning common collocations related to music and performance would be very beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'tell your about' (tell you about), 'where you perform outstanding' (where you performed outstandingly), and 'my friends and me made a band' (my friends and I formed a band). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas and periods. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency. Increasing your control over basic subject-verb agreement and verb tenses will significantly improve your accuracy.
