Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing about the meeting in your hotel last week. My company had an all-day meeting there.
First, I want to say that we liked your hotel. The meeting room was big and clean. The chairs were comfortable. Your staff were kind and helped us when we needed something. The hotel was also easy to find.
But we were not happy with the lunch. The food was cold and did not taste good. There were only a few items to eat. Some people wanted vegetarian food, but there was no good choice. We also waited a long time for lunch.
I think you should make better food next time. Please serve hot and fresh food. You should also have more kinds of food, including vegetarian meals. I hope you can improve your lunch service in the future.
Thank you for your time. I hope to hear from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Fardin Vahora

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to address the task requirements entirely. The prompt asks for a letter to a singer about a concert performance, including details about musical activities and a request for help. Instead, the student has written a letter of complaint to a hotel manager regarding a business meeting. Because the content is completely off-topic and does not address any of the bullet points provided in the instructions, it cannot be assessed as a successful response to the specific task set. While the letter format is followed, the content is irrelevant to the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: the positive aspects of the hotel, the complaints about the lunch, and the suggestions for improvement. The use of cohesive devices such as 'First', 'But', and 'I also' helps the reader follow the flow of the argument. While the content is off-topic, the structural organization of the text is coherent and easy to follow, demonstrating a logical progression of ideas within the context of a complaint letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, though it is somewhat basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'big and clean', 'kind and helped', and 'did not taste good' are functional but lack sophistication. There is little attempt to use less common lexical items or idiomatic language. However, the vocabulary used is accurate and appropriate for the context of a formal complaint, and there are no spelling errors that impede communication. To improve, the student should aim for more precise adjectives and varied collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a good grasp of simple sentence structures and maintains consistent control over basic grammar. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the tone is appropriate for a formal letter. There is a mix of simple and compound sentences, such as 'Some people wanted vegetarian food, but there was no good choice.' While there is a lack of complex grammatical structures (such as relative clauses or passive voice), the sentences produced are largely error-free and clear. The grammar is sufficient to convey the intended message effectively.
