Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Dosanjh,

I am writing this letter to express my feeling that how i felt while attending your concert last night.

I felt really glad that I was able to attend your concert last night. It was my first time that I saw your performance live on stage, which was full of energy and with confidence.

As I am a big fan of yours so while enjoying your performance, I was shooting videos as well as dancing because i really like to attend live concerts.

I would like you to help me in learning singing as you have such a great voice which admires me a lot. I really want to be a good singer one day same like you. I am currently doing practice for singing but I really need a teacher like you who can guide me properly and can motivate me to learn this skill.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Navdeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly expressed your feelings about the performance, described your musical activities, and explained how you would like the singer to help you. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, when describing your musical activities, you mention shooting videos and dancing, but expanding on your specific musical goals or current training would have made the response more engaging and fully developed. Overall, the task is completed successfully, but the depth of the content could be improved to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific part of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use basic cohesive devices like 'As I am' and 'I would like you to', which function well. However, the transition between ideas is sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect your sentences more fluidly, rather than relying on simple sentence structures. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'full of energy' and 'live on stage' are natural and appropriate. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'admires me a lot' (you likely meant 'inspires me') and 'doing practice for singing' (which should be 'practicing singing'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To reach a higher band, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensuring that your word choices are contextually accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'express my feeling that how i felt' (which is redundant and grammatically incorrect) and 'same like you' (which should be 'just like you'). Additionally, there are issues with capitalization (e.g., 'i') and sentence construction. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and avoiding redundant phrasing will help improve your accuracy.
