Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Diljit,

I am writing to express how wonderful I felt during your concert held at the Lester Center last Friday. It was a memorable moment to watch my favorite singer live. The energy you bought to the stage was incredible, and I couldn't stopped myself from dancing and screaming in joy. Moreover, the small stories between the songs that you shared with us were motivational and relatable. I wish that night would never end.

I would like to tell you that I am also a singer and song writer. I have been singing my own songs since childhood. Even, I have received an award of the best performer in the college's youth festival lately. In addition, I have received an invitation from a music company to record a song with them. I am so excited for this opportunity.

Since I have been watching your tutorial videos on YouTube, I have started learning guitar. However your videos have help me a lot in learning the complex rule of guitar in simpler form, I have been struggling to play guitar in live concerts. I would appreciate it if you could help me in person to understand the adjustment of the instrument for the live stage, especially how to increase the volume while playing live.

I hope you consider my request favorably, and give me an appointment to join you to learn more about the instrument.

Yours sincerely,

PJ

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly expressed your feelings about the concert, provided relevant details about your own musical background, and made a specific request for help regarding your guitar performance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a singer, maintaining a respectful and enthusiastic register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your narrative easily. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'However' to link your sentences and paragraphs effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the message. The flow is natural, and the relationship between your musical activities and your request for help is well-connected.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the context, such as 'motivational', 'relatable', and 'complex rule'. While most of your word choices are accurate, there are minor slips, such as 'energy you bought to the stage' (should be 'brought') and 'I couldn't stopped myself' (should be 'couldn't stop'). Despite these small errors, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning precisely and naturally. You show an ability to use less common items, which enhances the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'Even, I have received' (which is slightly awkward phrasing) and 'your videos have help me' (should be 'helped'). Additionally, there is a minor punctuation error in 'However your videos have help me a lot in learning the complex rule of guitar in simpler form, I have been struggling...' where the structure is slightly confusing. However, these errors do not impede communication. Your control over tense usage is generally good, and the overall message remains clear throughout the letter.
