Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Abraham

I am writing to express my sincere appreciation for the performance during the concert which had held in Calgary last week. It was a magnificent and memorable show.

I am a great admirer of yours. It was a wonderful opportunity for me to attend a live performance of yours. When you started to sing, I was mesmerized by the voice and cried out of joy.

I will always listen to your songs, and try to study it by heart. Last year, I started a small band with the help of my friends. Also, we are teaching music to some of the children, who is the inhabitant of the nearby charity organization.

In order to raise a fund for that organization, can you please give us your date with a reasonable rate. It will be helpful for them to conduct their daily activities.

I am looking forward to hear from you

Yours Sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly express your feelings about the performance, describe your musical activities (the band and teaching children), and explain your request for the singer's help. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer. However, the development of the final point is slightly abrupt; while you ask for a 'date' (which is slightly unnatural phrasing), the purpose is clear. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your musical activities and the request for help is more fluidly integrated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In order to' and 'Also', though the flow could be improved with more varied transition words. The referencing is generally clear, although the sentence 'who is the inhabitant of the nearby charity organization' is slightly clunky and could be better linked to the previous clause to improve the overall flow of the paragraph.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'mesmerized', 'magnificent', and 'appreciation'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'study it by heart' (usually 'learn by heart') and 'give us your date' (which sounds like a romantic date rather than a booking or appearance). These errors do not impede communication, but they show a need for more precise collocation. Expanding your range of idiomatic expressions or more sophisticated verbs would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'which had held' (should be 'which was held'), 'who is the inhabitant' (should be 'who are inhabitants'), and 'looking forward to hear' (should be 'looking forward to hearing'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct usage of gerunds after specific phrases like 'look forward to'.
