Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mr Smith,

I am writing this letter regarding your performance at the just concluded concert which was held at the sports club center last weekend and, how amazing your singing was.

Your voice brought back memories to me. The songs you sang were amazing and so was your stage presence. I remember when I was a teenager, I would play your album and sometimes, we would end up dancing to it. Your performance made me realize how much I have missed home and my family, and I’m considering visiting them this weekend especially to see my father.

I have always loved music. It gives me so much peace and comfort. Back when I was little, I would sing along to songs on the radio, which made me join my local church band. We usually rehearse every Tuesday and I can say I am getting better with both my stage performance and my vocal skills.

However, it will be a pleasure if you can assist me in becoming a better musician. For example, you can recommend online musical classes I can take or send me the details on how to join your music class. You can send me details through the email attached to this letter.

Thank you for the opportunity to meet you, I am looking forward for a positive feedback from you.

Yours sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly expressed your feelings about the performance, provided relevant details about your musical background, and made a specific request for assistance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer, maintaining a polite and respectful register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific details about your musical activities or the type of music you perform to further enhance the depth of your response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the letter easy to follow. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'For example' effectively. To improve, ensure that the transition between paragraphs is smoother. For instance, the jump from discussing your family to your musical history could be bridged with a more explicit linking phrase. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the clarity of your message.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning clearly. Phrases like 'stage presence' and 'rehearse' are well-chosen and contextually appropriate. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'just concluded concert' which sounds slightly unnatural, and 'looking forward for a positive feedback' which should be 'looking forward to positive feedback'. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions would help demonstrate a wider, more flexible range of lexical resources.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound. However, there are some minor errors, such as 'I am looking forward for a positive feedback' (should be 'to receiving positive feedback') and 'the sports club center' (which is slightly redundant). Additionally, ensure consistent use of articles and prepositions. Despite these occasional slips, your grammar does not impede communication, and you show a solid grasp of sentence construction.
