Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sartaj,

i am writing to you to appreciate your outstanding performance in the last week concert, which was held in the Toronto. I was very excited to see your live performance, because it was my dream to see you live.

I have also interest in music and I do it as my hobby. Furthermore, I am good to play the harmonium and guitar as I gave many performance in my school and college time. Apart from that I won prizes in the singing competitions.

It would be glad for me to get help from you to improve my singing skills. I know you have done PHD in music so, I think you would be great music teacher for me. It would be very helpful, if you will give class once a month, as you have a hectic schedule.

I will wait for your positive reply.

yours fan,

Manpreet Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly express your admiration for the performance, describe your musical background with the harmonium and guitar, and make a specific request for lessons. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a singer. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention your musical activities, expanding slightly on your specific achievements or the style of music you play would have provided a more comprehensive response. Overall, the task is fully addressed, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore,' 'Apart from that,' and 'However,' which help the flow of information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, you could improve the variety of your linking words and ensure that the transition between your musical background and the request for lessons is smoother. The referencing is generally clear, and the letter follows a standard, easy-to-follow structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'outstanding,' 'performance,' and 'hectic schedule.' There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'I have also interest in music' (should be 'I also have an interest') and 'I am good to play' (should be 'I am good at playing'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and variety of less common lexical items that would characterize a higher band score. The errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the sophistication of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'It would be very helpful, if you will give class...' and relative clauses like 'which was held in the Toronto.' However, there are several grammatical errors, including 'in the last week concert' (should be 'in last week's concert'), 'in the Toronto' (remove 'the'), and 'I have done PHD' (should be 'you have a PhD'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization errors. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message.
