Dear .................. ,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Arijit,

I am writing to congratulate for your recent successful concert in Ottawa. I felt peace and your melody took me back to our Indian culture. Everyone at concert has praised your performance.

Firstly, I recently started attending music classes. During my highschool days, I took part in music groups and have performed at provincial level competitions. Secondly, I am practicing daily and have been accounting two hours daily on my melody. I recently took part in national level Indian folk music festival held in Toronto and secured second prize. I love singing folk music and I believe we have mutual interest with diverse Indian culture.

Furthermore, I would like you to provide me daily and monthly milestones and acitivities to master folk music. If we could meet once every month at your convenience, it would be very helpful to accelerate my progress. Should you require more details about my class and teacher, I am happy to assist you.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Regards,

Ram.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly express your appreciation for the performance, provide relevant details about your musical background, and make a specific request for mentorship. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer, maintaining a respectful and enthusiastic register throughout. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the description of your recent achievements in folk music. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your musical activities and the singer's specific style is even more explicitly linked to show a deeper understanding of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use transition signals such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader through your points. While the paragraphing is effective, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of cohesive devices beyond simple sequencing words. For instance, some sentences feel slightly disjointed. Improving the use of referencing (e.g., using pronouns to link back to previous ideas) would help the text feel more cohesive and less like a list of points.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'provincial level', 'folk music', and 'accelerate my progress'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'accounting two hours daily on my melody' (which is unnatural; 'devoting two hours to practicing my craft' would be better) and 'congratulate for' (should be 'congratulate you on'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Expanding your range to include more precise collocations related to music would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'Everyone at concert has praised' (missing an article: 'at the concert') and 'we have mutual interest with diverse Indian culture' (preposition error: 'interest in'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout. To improve, focus on article usage and consistent verb tense agreement. Your control of punctuation is generally good, and the sentence structures are varied enough to maintain interest without causing confusion for the reader.
