Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to express my admiration and appreciation for your singing talent. Yesterday I attend Sa Re Ga ma concert and had the pleasure of watching you perform on stage with your group. Your voice was deeply inspired me.

I am also learning music these days. I have been performing at small concerts since 2024. My group and I have also performed harmonious songs in a varity of ways, including vocal performances and instrumental play. As well As I play the flute behind the scenes during theatre shows, providing background music that enhances the emotions of the characters. Besides singing, I also worked as Piano performer at Taj Resturant which helped me improve my musical skills and deepen my knowledge of playing instruments. In addition to the piano, I can also play the drums and guitar.

It would be great if you could also help promote our institute's new initiative. we are going to open a music school to encourage children to learn music and develop their talents. I believe it will benefit students and our institute grow.

I look forward to your positive response.

Yours Faithfully,

Bijal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly express your admiration for the singer's performance, detail your musical background (performing at concerts, playing the flute and piano), and explain your request for help with your school's initiative. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer. However, the development of the final point is slightly brief; while you mention the initiative, explaining exactly how his help would benefit the school (e.g., through a guest appearance or social media endorsement) would have strengthened the response. Overall, the task is addressed effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition to', 'Besides', and 'However', which help the flow of ideas. There are minor issues with referencing and sentence-level cohesion, such as the slightly awkward transition 'As well As I play the flute', which could be improved for better flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the body of musical experience, and the request. The progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'admiration', 'initiative', and 'instrumental play'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'varity' (variety) and 'Taj Resturant' (Restaurant), and the phrase 'instrumental play' is slightly unnatural compared to 'playing instruments'. While you attempt to use a variety of musical terms, some collocations are slightly off. Nevertheless, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly without any significant impediment to the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I have been performing at small concerts since 2024' and 'I believe it will benefit students and our institute grow'. There are several grammatical errors, including tense inconsistencies ('Yesterday I attend' instead of 'attended') and minor punctuation or capitalization issues (e.g., 'we are going to open' should be capitalized). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, you should focus on ensuring consistent verb tenses and improving the accuracy of complex sentence constructions.
