Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Mr Marcos,
I am writing this to express the satisfactory experience I had while attending your "Aura" concert in Edmonton last weekend.
Admittedly, your performance was spectacular. Your voice is extremely powerful and the emotions you delivered through your lyrics and singing style are truly unforgettable. I was especially impressed by the way you connected to the audience which created a lively atmosphere.
Music has always been an important part of my life. I enjoy listening to different genres of music and practice high notes in my free time. Moreover, I am also attending vocal lessons to improve my singing techniques to become a professional singer in the future.
I would be extremely grateful if you could offer some guidance for vocal exercises and training lessons. If possible, I would appreciate it if you could give me an opportunity to attend one of your workshops or masterclasses. Your advice is invaluable and it will inspire me to continue my passion and career in music.
Thank you for your time. I hope you have more success in your future music journey and looking forward to hear your advice.
Yours sincerely,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly express your admiration for the performance, provide relevant details about your musical background, and make a specific request for guidance. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a performer, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of the task. You have maintained a consistent and polite tone throughout, which is essential for this type of correspondence. No parts of the prompt were missed, and the response is well-structured to meet the requirements of a General Training Task 1 letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the prompt. You use appropriate paragraphing to separate your introduction, the description of your musical activities, your request, and the closing. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Admittedly', and 'If possible' are used effectively to link ideas and guide the reader through the text. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving naturally from the concert experience to your personal musical journey and finally to your specific request for help. The flow of the letter is natural and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the context. Phrases like 'extremely powerful', 'unforgettable', and 'invaluable' show a good command of descriptive language. There is a clear attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, such as 'spectacular' and 'techniques'. The word choices are generally precise and contribute to the professional yet appreciative tone of the letter. While the vocabulary is effective, incorporating a few more idiomatic expressions or nuanced collocations related to music could elevate the response further. There are no significant errors in word choice or spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The letter displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use complex sentences effectively, such as 'I would be extremely grateful if you could offer some guidance...' and 'If possible, I would appreciate it if you could give me an opportunity...'. Most sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is strong. There is a minor grammatical slip in the final sentence: 'looking forward to hear' should be 'looking forward to hearing'. Despite this, the majority of your writing is accurate, and the minor error does not impede communication or detract significantly from the overall quality of the writing.
