Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Jass,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to tell you how much i enjoyed your performance at the concert i attended last weekend in Toronto. Your voice was powerful, and the way you contacted with the audience made the whole event unforgettable. Every song full of energy and emotion, and I was completely impressed by your stage presence.

I have always been interested in music. Although I am not a professional singer, I enjoy singing in my free time and offen take part in family gathering and community events. I also practice by listening to different songs and recoding my voice so that I can improve my pronunciation, pitch, and confidence.

As you are an experienced artist, i would be grate full if you could guide me. If possible, i would love to attend one off your online work shops or receive a few tips on improving my singing technique and stage performance. Even a short piece of advice from you would motivate me to work harder and achieve my goal.

Than you for giving us such a wonderful evening . I look forward to hearing from you .

Yours sincerely.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly express your appreciation for the performance, provide relevant details about your musical activities, and make a specific request for guidance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer, maintaining a polite and enthusiastic register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task, ensuring the reader understands your purpose immediately. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your musical activities and the request for help is slightly more integrated, though you have met all requirements effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your narrative easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'As', and 'If possible' to link your sentences effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body, and conclusion. To improve, you could experiment with a wider variety of linking words or transition phrases to make the flow between sentences feel more sophisticated and less mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the context, such as 'unforgettable', 'stage presence', and 'technique'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'contacted with' (should be 'connected with'), 'offen' (often), 'recoding' (recording), 'grate full' (grateful), and 'one off' (one of). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, focus on refining your collocations and ensuring accurate spelling of common words, as well as incorporating more precise or idiomatic expressions to convey your enthusiasm.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'If possible, i would love to...' and the concessive clause 'Although I am not a professional singer...'. There are several grammatical slips, including inconsistent capitalization of 'i', missing articles, and minor punctuation errors. However, these errors are non-systematic and do not cause confusion for the reader. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and ensure that you consistently capitalize the first-person pronoun 'I'. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help move your score into the higher bands.
