Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Atif,
I am writing to express my gratitude for the concert that I have attended last week at the Green dome, Calgary, Alberta.
I enjoyed many concerts, qawalies and naat events, but I always had an wish to attend one your event. I was overwhelmed, amazed, and enjoyed at your concert. Your energy was awesome. It felt like I was in another universe while listening to your naats. I love the way you respect our culture and religion. Additionally, the refreshment provided by your team with no additional cost made my day.
I also love to sing music, especially the religious songs. I am continuously working on my tone while signing. When I was 8 years old, I used to practice drums at my home. After few years, I also took professional drum classes. Currently, I am trying to learn Piano. I enjoy my life while singing.
I am still struggling with Piano, and specially how to adjust my tone while signing. I have seen how beautifully you can manage the piano and drums together, and still focusing on your music. I know you have a busy schedule but, I request you to please provide me some tricks and tips about how I can improve myself.
I am looking forward to a prompt reply.
Kind regards,
Nizamuddin Memon

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly express your feelings about the concert, provide relevant details about your musical background (drums and piano), and make a specific request for advice. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer, and the purpose of the communication is clear throughout. To improve, you could expand slightly on the 'musical activities' section to make the connection between your current skills and the specific advice you are seeking more explicit, which would further develop the ideas and ensure a more cohesive narrative flow.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing that separates the different requirements of the task. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Additionally' and 'I also love to sing'. However, the flow between sentences could be improved; some transitions feel slightly mechanical. For example, the jump from discussing the concert to your personal musical history is a bit abrupt. Using more sophisticated linking phrases or better signposting would help the ideas progress more naturally. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'overwhelmed', 'gratitude', and 'professional'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'had an wish' (should be 'a wish') and 'signing' (which likely means 'singing'). While these errors do not impede communication, they do limit the precision of your writing. To reach a higher band, focus on using more varied and precise collocations related to music and performance, and ensure you are using articles and verb forms correctly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'concert that I have attended' (should be 'attended'), 'one your event' (should be 'one of your events'), and 'After few years' (should be 'After a few years'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to affect the overall fluency. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would significantly improve your accuracy.
