Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Justin,
I hope you are doing as pleasant as your music.
I attended your concert last weekend at The Peterborough Music Festival, and I'm writing to appreciate how beautifully you play your art. The second you struck your guitar, it felt as if someone poured honey in my ears. Being a guitarist myself, I was in complete awe of how you played Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond such delicately on your guitar, it took me back to my childhood memories of when my dad used to play this song for my mom.
Since their 25th anniversary is approaching, I would love to surprise them by playing this song at their anniversary party. I saw your campaign advertisement about "Love Yourself With Music" all around the festival and would love the opportunity to volunteer and get a chance to learn this song from the absolute best and surprise my parents.
I am eagerly waiting to hear back from you.
Thank you.
Yours truly,
Dave

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly expressed your admiration for the performance, provided relevant details about your own musical background as a guitarist, and explained your request for help regarding the 'Love Yourself With Music' campaign. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a musician, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of the task, meeting the requirements for a Band 8 level of task achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You use appropriate paragraphing to separate the introduction, the body of the letter, and the closing. Cohesive devices such as 'Since', 'Being a guitarist myself', and 'I am eagerly waiting' are used effectively to link your thoughts. The flow of information is smooth, and the letter is easy to follow from start to finish. The structure is coherent and meets the criteria for a high band score.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using descriptive phrases such as 'in complete awe' and 'poured honey in my ears'. These choices show an attempt to use more sophisticated language. However, there are minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'doing as pleasant as your music' (should be 'as pleasant as your music is') and 'played... such delicately' (should be 'so delicately'). Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message with precision and style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as the aforementioned 'doing as pleasant as' and the adverbial error 'played... such delicately'. Additionally, the phrase 'Since their 25th anniversary' lacks a clear antecedent for 'their' (referring to parents not previously mentioned). While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are clear and well-constructed, showing a good level of control over English grammar.
