Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear John,
I am writing to express my feelings about a recent concert of yours that I attended recently.
I have been a big fan of you since childhood and it was my dream to see you performing live. Last Sunday, I got a chance to attend your concert with some of my close friends. I really enjoyed my dream coming true. Your performance completely amazed me and I felt so relaxed being on the concert.
You are my true inspiration for music. Because of you, I have been trying to learn some music instruments since primary school. I have taken admission to improve my singing skills and started giving a good amount of time to improve them.
However, I am still struggling with confidence to sing in front of public. I have tried several courses but they did not work for me. I would be grateful if you could give me some helpful tips to improve this weakness. I know you are having a busy schedules, some online courses of you would be of great help.
I look forward to hearing from you and see you soon at your upcoming concert.
Yours Sincerely,
Mike

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly express your appreciation for the performance, describe your musical background, and make a specific request for help regarding your stage confidence. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a singer, maintaining a respectful and enthusiastic register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, ensuring the reader understands your purpose immediately. To reach a higher band, ensure that the request for help is slightly more detailed or specific, perhaps by explaining exactly what kind of 'tips' you are looking for beyond just 'online courses'.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your narrative easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'Because of you' to link ideas. To improve, try to vary your transitions further; for instance, instead of starting sentences with 'I' repeatedly, use introductory phrases or adverbial clauses to create better flow between sentences. The paragraphing is appropriate and supports the overall structure of the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'true inspiration' and 'struggling with confidence' are natural and effective. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'taken admission' (should be 'enrolled in') and 'having a busy schedules' (should be 'have a busy schedule'). While these do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over common English collocations. Expanding your range to include more sophisticated synonyms would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'a big fan of you' (should be 'a big fan of yours'), 'being on the concert' (should be 'at the concert'), and 'some online courses of you' (should be 'some of your online courses'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions, as these are the primary areas where your accuracy slips.
