Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir,
I hope you are doing well. I attended your concert in New York last week and I am so over whelmed with your performance.
I love how you played guitar and sing all along with it . it was soo good and your voice is so mesmerizing. well I am also a very good vocalist. I used to play with the famous band from Chicago. I learned everything from them I used to play drums, guitar and sing.
Honestly, I need your help in my singing skills I think I am not a good singer as I wanted to be always. I think there is something missing like I get nervous sometimes especially in front of large crowd I need yours help typically in building my confidence how to sing and don't think about anything else. I will send you recordings with this letter and I wanted to you listen to it and tell me where I am lacking.
hope to get a response as soon as possible.
yours faithfully
harpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly express your admiration for the performance, describe your musical background with a band in Chicago, and explain your need for help with stage confidence. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a performer, although the opening 'Dear sir' is a bit generic; using the singer's name would have been more professional. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the task requirements. To improve, ensure that the connection between your musical background and your request for help is more explicitly linked to show a deeper engagement with the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the prompt. There is a clear progression of ideas from the concert experience to your personal background and finally to your request for assistance. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited and occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition between sentences in the second paragraph is a bit abrupt. Using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in addition to this') would help the text flow more naturally and improve the overall cohesion of the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'mesmerizing', 'vocalist', and 'recordings'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'over whelmed' (should be one word: 'overwhelmed') and 'sing all along with it' (which is slightly unnatural; 'accompanying yourself' would be better). The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score. Focusing on learning more sophisticated collocations related to music and performance would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I wanted to you listen to it' (should be 'I want you to listen to it') and 'don't think about anything else' (which lacks a subject or proper structure). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with capitalization and sentence boundaries. To reach a higher band, you should work on subject-verb agreement and ensure that complex sentences are constructed with greater accuracy. Proofreading for minor slips in tense and word order will also help improve your score.
