Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Arijith,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to share my feelings over a concert hosted in Ahmedabad on 15th August. I have never been to an amazing concert like this before in my life.

To begin with, I enjoyed all the songs during that concert especially national anthem of India, which was amazing. In addition, audience particularly liked the last song as your voice made it too powerful. As a result, everybody got emotional and started cheering you.

For a couple of months, I have started learning a Guitar and I am practicing it for two to three hours a day. Moreover, I also participate in my college events as my long term goal is to become a musician.

I regularly post my performance on Instagram. Therefore, I would be grateful if you could watch these videos and share some invaluable feedback to improve my skills. I am waiting for your response.

Best regards,

Dhruv Bavadiya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You clearly expressed your feelings about the performance, provided relevant details about your musical activities, and made a specific, logical request for feedback. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, and the letter maintains a consistent focus throughout. The structure is logical, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. You have successfully met all the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You have used cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different topics requested in the prompt. The progression of ideas is logical, moving from the concert experience to your personal musical journey and finally to your request for assistance.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'invaluable feedback' and 'long term goal' are used correctly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'learning a Guitar' (should be 'learning the guitar') and 'share my feelings over a concert' (should be 'about a concert'). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise adjectives and idiomatic expressions related to music and performance to demonstrate a wider, more flexible range of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to follow. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'I have started learning a Guitar' (article usage) and 'I am practicing it for two to three hours a day' (tense consistency could be improved; 'have been practicing' would be more accurate for an ongoing action). Punctuation is generally accurate, and these minor errors do not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures would further enhance your score.
