Dear .................. ,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Marcos,

I am writing this to express my delightful experience while attending your signing concert last week in Edmonton. Your voice is extermely powerful and expressive while signing emotional lyrics. Moreover, It was factinating to see your connection with audience while performing on the stage. I felt disconnected from the rest of world while signing along with the audience.

Admittedly, music is an important part of my life. I listen to different genres of music and tried high-notes to enhance my vocal skills on daily basis. I am attending some sessions to improve my musical performance. Moreover, I performed in the local musical show in the recreational centre which was organised by the town council. And, i am seeking for more opportunities to illustrate my talent.

I would be grateful if you could provide some assistance to enhance my skills by giving some suggestions on vocal exercises, training sessions and chance to attend your upcoming workshop or masterclass.

Looking forward to hear from you. I hope you get more success in your muscial career.

Yours sincerely,

Joe

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly expressed your feelings about the performance, provided relevant details about your musical activities, and made a specific request for assistance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer, and the purpose is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, describing the specific musical activities or the nature of your vocal training in more detail would strengthen the response. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Admittedly' to link ideas. However, there are some minor issues with flow and punctuation, such as the missing space after the period in 'council. And, i'. Additionally, the transition between the first and second paragraph could be smoother. While the overall progression is logical, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes a bit mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring consistent punctuation would enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'expressive', 'genres', and 'recreational'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'signing' instead of 'singing', 'extermely', 'factinating', and 'muscial'. These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on proofreading for common spelling mistakes and try to incorporate more precise collocations. For example, instead of 'illustrate my talent', 'showcase my talent' would be more natural in this context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing this to express my delightful experience' (which is slightly unnatural; 'express my appreciation' or 'share my experience' would be better) and 'I am seeking for' (the verb 'seek' does not require 'for'). You also have issues with article usage and capitalization, such as 'the rest of world' and 'i'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to limit your score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
