You recently went to a concert and thought one of the singers was very good. You want to tell him how you feel. Write a letter to the singer. In your letter

- explain how you would like him to help you with your musical activities
You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Dear .................. ,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Justin,
This letter is a small token of my immense love and appreciation for your outstanding performance with your band at the Rogers Stadium, Edmonton, last week on Sunday.
My friends and I attended the concert. When you came on stage, the crowd was so energised and started tapping on the floor while dancing; for a moment, it felt like the ground was shaking. I am really glad that I witnessed you creating the history myself. This was the first time ever that the stadium tickets sold out for a non-Canadian singer. Everyone was singing, dancing, and flashing lights; that was something extraordinary that I hadn't seen like that before.
I also am practising songs of my own with my guitar. As I follow you on all your social media platforms, and I love your videos in which you give advice to people like me. I would like you to make a detailed video for making a composition of the songs. I would love that.
Hoping to attend your next concert in Vancouver as well.
Lots of love from one of your biggest fans!
Cheers,
Darren Keam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly express your appreciation for the performance, provide relevant details about your own musical activities (playing the guitar), and make a specific request for help (a video on song composition). The tone is appropriate for a fan writing to a singer, maintaining a friendly and enthusiastic register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task by covering all parts of the prompt in a coherent and logical manner.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the initial appreciation from the personal details and the final request. You use cohesive devices such as 'When you came on stage,' 'As I follow you,' and 'Hoping to attend' to link your thoughts smoothly. The flow of the letter is natural, and the relationship between the paragraphs is logical. There is a consistent sense of progression from the concert experience to your personal musical journey and finally to your request for assistance.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using phrases like 'immense love and appreciation,' 'extraordinary,' and 'witnessed you creating the history.' The language is natural and fits the context of a fan letter well. While there are no major errors in word choice, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than highly sophisticated. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise collocations or idiomatic expressions related to music and performance. Overall, the lexical range is sufficient to convey your message clearly and effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional-like structure 'As I follow you... I would like you to...' and the relative clause 'in which you give advice.' Most sentences are error-free, though there are minor slips, such as 'witnessed you creating the history myself' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'for making a composition of the songs' (which could be more concisely phrased). However, these errors do not impede communication. Your control of punctuation and tense usage is generally strong, contributing to the overall clarity of the letter.
