Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sagar,
I hope you are doing well, I finally got the chance to attend your concert, I was eagerly waiting for that moment. I am your big fan.
On last Saturday I came to your concert held in Toronto with my friends. The concert was organised for the back street boys, but you made a surprise visit. No one had any idea regarding your special appearance in the show. It was a dream come true for me.
Moreover, You sung your latest songs Sajan and Sultan which had classical music. I never knew you can also sing classical songs. I am a music student and I want to practice classic music. You are my inspiration.
I would appreciate if you could give me the opportunity to join your music school. I also want to know the fees and schedule of the course.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
John Smith

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You expressed your feelings about the performance, described your background as a music student, and clearly explained your request for guidance at his music school. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on your musical activities to provide more depth, as the current explanation is quite brief. Overall, the response is relevant and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'I also' to link your ideas. However, the progression between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition from the concert description to your personal musical background is a bit abrupt. Using a wider variety of linking words or phrases would improve the flow and help the reader follow your train of thought more naturally throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'surprise visit' and 'inspiration' appropriately. However, there are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'You sung' (should be 'You sang') and 'classic music' (should be 'classical music'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to music and performance. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, it lacks the variety and sophistication required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as comma splices in the first paragraph ('...doing well, I finally...'), and subject-verb agreement issues like 'You sung'. Additionally, 'I never knew you can also sing' should be 'I never knew you could also sing' to maintain correct tense sequence. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on sentence boundaries and verb tenses will significantly improve your accuracy.
