Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly express your appreciation for the performance, describe your background as a drummer, and propose a collaboration. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the description of your musical activities is brief and lacks specific detail regarding the 'awards' mentioned. While the purpose of the letter is clear, the tone is occasionally inconsistent, and the explanation of how you could help the singer is quite direct. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are expanded with more descriptive language and that the tone remains consistently professional and polite throughout the correspondence.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your message. You use some basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'However' to link your ideas. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as the transition into the second paragraph. Additionally, there are instances where the flow between sentences is disjointed, particularly in the third paragraph where the connection between your drumming experience and the concert participation is abrupt. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would significantly enhance the overall coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'arrangements', 'performance', and 'authorities'. However, there are several errors in word choice and collocation that hinder the precision of your writing. For example, 'found off' should be 'fond of', and 'drum person' is not standard terminology; 'drummer' or 'percussionist' would be more appropriate. You also use 'over crowd' incorrectly to describe the audience's reaction. While your meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in word formation and collocation suggest a limited control over more sophisticated vocabulary. Focusing on learning common collocations will help improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
Your writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader's understanding. Common issues include incorrect verb tenses (e.g., 'concert that held' instead of 'concert that was held'), subject-verb agreement errors (e.g., 'you sing a song good'), and missing articles or prepositions. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage and capitalization. While you attempt to use complex sentences, they often contain errors that affect clarity. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically verb tense consistency and the correct use of articles, before attempting more complex grammatical structures.
