Dear .................. ,

Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Alex,

I am writing to tell you how much I enjoyed your performance at the concert last Saturday. Your voice was absolutely amazing, and I was particularly impressed by the way you expressed emotion through your singing. The whole audience seemed to be completely captivated by you.

I am also very interested in music myself. I have been playing the guitar for three years and recently started writing my own songs. I usually practise for about an hour every evening, and I sometimes perform with my friends at small school events. Although I enjoy music very much, I would like to improve my singing and songwriting skills.

I would be extremely grateful if you could give me some advice about developing my voice and writing better songs. If possible, I would also appreciate it if you could recommend some exercises or suggest useful books and online resources. It would be wonderful to hear your opinion about one of my songs as well.

Thank you for inspiring me with your fantastic performance. I hope to hear you sing again in the future.

Yours sincerely,

Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly express your appreciation for the performance, provide relevant details about your musical background (playing guitar for three years and songwriting), and make specific requests for guidance. The tone is consistently appropriate for a letter to a performer, maintaining a polite and enthusiastic register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and logically presented, meeting all requirements of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Although', 'If possible', and 'In addition', which help to link your ideas naturally. The paragraphing is logical, and the overall structure follows the standard conventions of a formal letter, making the text easy to follow from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the context. Phrases like 'completely captivated', 'extremely grateful', and 'developing my voice' show a natural command of language. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the tone well, it remains somewhat standard. To reach the highest bands, you could incorporate more precise or sophisticated collocations related to music and performance, but the current range is sufficient to convey your message with precision and clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.5

The grammar is highly accurate throughout the letter. You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses ('If possible, I would also appreciate...') and subordinate clauses ('Although I enjoy music very much...'), with no noticeable errors. Punctuation is used correctly, and the sentence construction is varied and fluent. The control over tense and aspect is consistent, and there are no slips that impede communication, reflecting a high level of grammatical competence.
