Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Drake,

I hope you are doing well. I recently watched your performance and I am writing to express, how amazing it was. Your voice is incredible and the emotions your songs create while performing are exceptional.

Honestly, it was my first time at the concert and I am really impressed with your performance. Your entry on the stage is astonishing and the moment when you started singing, I literally had goosebumps.

I am also a professional guitarist and have been playing guitar since I was 12 years old. I also featured in a song last year and had won multiple awards in regional music competitions. Moreover, I have 500k subscribers on my YouTube channel.

I would really appreciate, if you gave me a chance to playing guitar for you or give me any reference in the music industry, so I could start my professional music career. I would love to show you my skills whenever you are free.

Thank you for such an inspiring performance. I truly appreciate your time and would be very grateful for your assistance with my request. I hope to hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Davis Will

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly express your admiration for the performance, provide relevant details about your background as a guitarist, and make a specific request for assistance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a public figure, maintaining a polite and professional register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements, ensuring the reader understands both your appreciation and your professional aspirations. No parts of the task were omitted, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your narrative easily. You use appropriate paragraphing and transition words such as 'Honestly,' 'I am also,' and 'Moreover' to connect your thoughts. While the flow is generally smooth, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes slightly mechanical. However, the overall structure is sound, and the referencing is clear throughout the text, making the letter easy to read and understand.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'exceptional,' 'astonishing,' and 'inspiring' to convey your feelings effectively. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is generally successful. However, there are minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'had won' (should be 'have won' to match the present perfect context) and 'chance to playing' (should be 'chance to play'). Despite these occasional inaccuracies, your vocabulary is sufficient to express your ideas with precision and style, and the errors do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are several error-free sentences, and your control of punctuation is generally good. However, there are a few grammatical slips, such as the unnecessary comma in 'express, how amazing' and the previously mentioned 'chance to playing'. These are minor errors that do not affect the clarity of your message. To reach a higher band, ensure consistent use of verb tenses and avoid unnecessary punctuation between verbs and their objects. Overall, your grammatical control is strong and supports the message well.
