Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Drake,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to express my sincere admiration about your show in roger centre last Saturday. Your performance was incredible.

Your entry onto the stage is astonishing, along with your voice, stage presence and music creates a emotional bond among the audience. When u started singing, I literally had goosebumps.

I am also a professional guitarist and have been playing guitar since I was 15 years old. Last year, I also featured in a song and won multiple awards in regional music festivals. Moreover, I always try to perform at open mic events and also build my YouTube channel to 500k subscribers, where I post my performances and vocals.

I would really appreciate if I could get a chance to join your team or you could refer me to any music agency. This would help me to start my professional career. If your schedule allows, I would love to show you my skills.

Thank you for such an amazing performance. I truly appreciate your time and would be very grateful for your assistance with my request. I hope to hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Davil Will

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly express your admiration for the performance, provide relevant details about your background as a guitarist and YouTuber, and make a specific request for assistance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer, maintaining a respectful and professional register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task instructions, ensuring the reader understands both your appreciation and your professional aspirations. No parts of the task were omitted, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your train of thought easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'In addition' (implied by the flow), though the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be slightly smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the body of the letter, and the conclusion. The overall structure is coherent, and the information is presented in a logical sequence that makes the letter easy to read.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'sincere admiration,' 'emotional bond,' and 'professional career.' There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'entry onto the stage is astonishing' (should be 'was') and 'build my YouTube channel' (better as 'grew my YouTube channel'). However, these errors do not impede communication. You use some less common items effectively, which shows a good level of control. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring that verb tenses and word forms consistently match the context of the narrative.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'your voice... creates a emotional bond' (should be 'an emotional bond') and 'I would really appreciate if I could' (should be 'I would really appreciate it if...'). Additionally, there is a tense inconsistency in the second paragraph ('is astonishing' vs 'started singing'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences would help improve this score.
