Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Karan,

I am writing this letter in regard to your recent epic performance held in xyz stadium. The song name wavy got me jumping up and down.

I was there for the main act but your extraordinary talent just steal the whole show. The ten minutes felt really amazing to me and I hope everyone will agree with me if you ask them.

After watching you for the first time, I researched about you and came across really good songs. I write songs myself but not able to sing well.

If you take some time off and help me giving some tips about how can I improve my singing, that will be greatly appreciated.

At last I want to thank you for reading this letter and I am really grateful that i was part of the show. And hoping to be part of many upcoming shows that will be help in Toronto.

Have a wonderful year ahead.

Your faithful,

Surya Dulawat

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing your feelings about the performance, detailing your musical activities, and requesting help. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention you write songs, you could have elaborated on the genre or your specific challenges to make the request for help more compelling. The letter is clear and the purpose is well-defined, meeting the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'After watching you' and 'At last', though the transition between ideas could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly disjointed. Overall, the organisation is coherent and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using words like 'extraordinary', 'appreciated', and 'grateful'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'steal the whole show' (should be 'stole') and 'help me giving some tips' (should be 'help me by giving'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precision. Expanding your vocabulary to include more idiomatic expressions or precise verbs would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'not able to sing well' (missing subject/verb), 'that will be help' (should be 'helpful'), and 'Your faithful' (should be 'Yours faithfully'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with correct auxiliary verbs and prepositions.
