Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sam,

Firstly, I would like to thank you for the amazing experience we had at your last show at Scotiabank Arena. Although we had a hard time getting in, the moment you walked in, our frustration turned into excitement. Your stage presence, energy, and incredible voice were definitely among the most amazing performances I have ever seen

During my college days, I used to play piano a lot. This made me realize my potential interest in music. After that, I joined music school to improve my skills. Now I have my own small band. We give live performances during special events like weddings, parties, etc.

Recently, I found out about your charity one-day seminar for aspiring musicians. If I get to meet you that day, I would love for you to teach me composition. Also, it would be great if u could provide some insights regarding our performances with the band.

I am looking forward to meeting you.

Best regards,

PP

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly express your admiration for the singer's performance, provide relevant background on your musical journey from college piano to your current band, and explain your specific request for mentorship regarding composition and performance feedback. The tone is appropriate for a fan writing to a professional, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail about the 'musical activities' to make the narrative more engaging, but overall, the task is fully satisfied.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is well-organized with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your message easily. You use appropriate paragraphing and transition words like 'Firstly' and 'Recently' to guide the reader. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some cohesive devices are quite standard. To improve, you could experiment with a wider variety of linking phrases to connect your sentences more fluidly, as some transitions feel slightly mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for this task, using terms like 'stage presence,' 'aspiring musicians,' and 'potential interest.' The language is natural and conveys your meaning effectively. There is one minor informal slip ('u' instead of 'you'), which should be avoided in any written task. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to describe your musical experiences, as the current vocabulary is functional but occasionally lacks variety.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is generally accurate. There is a minor error in the first paragraph: 'the moment you walked in' should likely be 'the moment you walked on stage' to fit the context of a concert. Additionally, ensure you use full forms (e.g., 'you' instead of 'u') to maintain a professional standard. The grammar is strong enough to ensure clear communication throughout the letter.
