Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Manak,
I am writing to show my sincere appreciation for your outstanding performance at your concert that I attended last weekend. I was really impressed by your powerful voice, stage presentation and emotions that you conveyed to the audience through your songs. Your performance was really inspiring for me and made the evening unforgettable for me.
I have been passionate about music for several years and regularly sing in my free time. At the moment, I am learning guitar and participate in small events at college and in my local community.
As you have a considerable amount of experience in the music industry, I would be really grateful if you can give me advice to improve my confidence and vocal tecniques. It would also be great if you can suggest me some online resources and songs to improve my voice.
Thank you for taking time to read my letter. I hope I will get chance to attend more of your concerts in future.
your faithfully,
SImrat Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly express your admiration for the singer's performance, describe your own musical background, and make a specific request for guidance. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a public figure. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing enough detail to satisfy the task requirements. The letter maintains a consistent purpose throughout, and the structure is logical, ensuring the reader understands your intent immediately. No parts of the prompt were omitted, and the response is well-focused on the requested information.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is well-organized with clear paragraphing that separates the different requirements of the task. Each paragraph has a clear central theme, and the progression of ideas is logical. You use cohesive devices such as 'At the moment' and 'As you have' to link your thoughts effectively. The transition between your appreciation of the concert and your own musical activities is smooth. The letter flows well, and the use of referencing is clear throughout. The overall structure is professional and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a coherent piece of writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using phrases like 'sincere appreciation', 'outstanding performance', and 'considerable amount of experience' effectively. The word choice is generally precise and appropriate for the context. There is a minor spelling error ('tecniques' should be 'techniques') and a slight collocation issue ('suggest me some' should be 'suggest some to me'), but these do not impede communication. You show an ability to use less common vocabulary, which adds to the quality of the letter. Overall, your lexical range is sufficient to convey your message with clarity and a touch of sophistication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and your control over grammar is generally strong. There are a few minor slips, such as the incorrect sign-off ('your faithfully' should be 'Yours faithfully') and the previously mentioned minor error in the request sentence. However, these errors are infrequent and do not interfere with the reader's understanding. You demonstrate a good grasp of punctuation and sentence construction, which allows for a natural and professional tone throughout the letter.
