Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Diljit,

I am writing to express my experience that I had in your concert that was recently held at Rogers Centre Toronto.

I am so pleased with your performance. It was not only energetic but also positive which gives me energy to focus on my goals. Before the concert, I was feeling low and was not able to concentrate on my targets. However, listening your live music helps me to stay away from anxiety, stress and depression.

This year, i am participating in my college festival for a singing competition next month. Moreover, I am following your approach of rehearsal every day and staying focus to achieve good results. I am practicing everyday for improving my vocal and musical instruments such as, Guitar, Sitar.

I would really appreciate if you can help me by providing some tips on how to handle unforeseen circumstances like, power cut, audience reaction.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Lovejeet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly expressed your feelings about the concert, described your current musical activities, and made a specific request for advice regarding performance challenges. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, meeting the requirements of the task effectively. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your personal feelings and the singer's performance is slightly more detailed, perhaps by mentioning a specific song or moment that resonated with you.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Moreover' and 'However', to link your thoughts. To improve, try to vary your linking words further and ensure that the transition between your personal feelings and your musical activities is smoother. Some sentences feel slightly disjointed, so using more sophisticated cohesive phrases would help the flow of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'unforeseen circumstances' and 'express my experience' are well-chosen. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'listening your live music' (should be 'listening to') and 'staying focus' (should be 'staying focused'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from being considered 'flexible' or 'precise'. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives and ensuring correct preposition usage will help elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as 'express my experience that I had' (a bit wordy/awkward) and 'listening your live music'. Additionally, there are minor punctuation issues, such as the unnecessary comma after 'such as'. The use of 'i' instead of 'I' is a recurring mechanical error. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that your complex sentences are constructed with greater accuracy. The majority of your sentences are understandable, but the frequency of small errors keeps this in the 6.0 range.
