Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear John,
I hope this email finds you well. I am writing this email to congratulate you on your spectacular performance in yesterday concert in Downtown.
Your concert came as a strong recommendation from my best friend who is following your band in Social Media especially on Instagram. To be honest, you guys just nailed it. The most impressive part was how the entire audience felt a soul connection with your lyrics and music. It was a honor to witness such a power bomb performance.
I am also into music from the past three years and I love playing guitar in my leisure time. This year, I won the annual 'Emerging Talent Award' guitar competition held in our city. Furthermore, I am planning to upgrade my musical instrument inventory.
I am looking to buy a high quality speaker that has good woofer, and which must be easy to carry. My eyes caught a similar speaker which your band was using in yesterday concert. Could you please recommend me some musical shops who deals with similar speakers? My maximum budget is $3000 that I can invest on speaker.
Your recommendations will be highly appreciated as it will catapult my musical journey as my current speaker has worn out.
Thank you once again for such a spell bounding performance. We can't wait to attend your next month concert.
Best regards,
Abhishek B

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You expressed your appreciation for the performance, provided relevant details about your musical background, and clearly explained how you would like the singer to assist you. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task. You maintained a consistent purpose throughout the letter, ensuring the reader understands both your admiration and your specific request for advice on musical equipment.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'To be honest', and 'In addition' to link your thoughts. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be slightly more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate your praise, your background, and your specific request.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using phrases like 'spectacular performance', 'musical inventory', and 'catapult my musical journey'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'power bomb performance' (which is non-standard) and 'spell bounding' (should be 'spellbinding'). Additionally, 'shops who deals' should be 'shops that deal'. Despite these minor inaccuracies, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively, and you show an attempt to use more descriptive language to enhance your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'yesterday concert' (should be 'yesterday's concert'), 'in Social Media' (should be 'on social media'), and 'a honor' (should be 'an honor'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. Your control over sentence structure is generally good, and you successfully use a variety of tenses to describe past events and future intentions. Focusing on articles and possessives will help improve your accuracy.
