Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Shah,
I am writing to express my thoughts for your incredible performance at the Tom Palace last Sunday night.
To begin with, your vocal range and energy was strong enough to brew me away and it was one of the best live shows I have ever attended in my life. Similarly, my friends have enjoyed the show.
Regarding my career in music, I am a local singer and trying to sing folk songs with the mixture of traditional rap song. Also, I am uploading all my videos on youtube but fail to gain the reach.
I would request you to help me out in this phase of my career. Initially, you can watch my videos and give me feedback on my singing. Afterwards, can you share my videos on your instagram handle to gain the views and likes?
I hope you will consider my request favorably, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours Sincerely,
Anshu Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly express your appreciation for the performance, describe your musical background, and make a specific request for assistance. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a performer. To improve, you could provide more depth in the second bullet point; for example, mentioning how long you have been singing or what specific challenges you face with your folk-rap fusion would make the ideas more fully developed and engaging for the reader.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a single aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'To begin with', 'Regarding', and 'Initially' to link your thoughts. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. To reach a higher band, ensure that your referencing is precise and that you use a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences within paragraphs more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'vocal range', 'favourably', and 'career in music'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation that slightly hinder the natural flow. For instance, 'brew me away' is an incorrect idiom (the correct phrase is 'blow me away'), and 'fail to gain the reach' is slightly unnatural. Using more precise collocations would improve your score. You have a sufficient range to communicate your message clearly, but more sophisticated vocabulary would elevate the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'energy was strong' (should be 'energy were' or 'energy was' with a different verb) and 'mixture of traditional rap song' (should be 'songs'). Additionally, 'I am a local singer and trying to sing' lacks a subject in the second clause. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that all clauses have a clear subject.
