Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Diljit,

I am writing to express how wonderful I felt during your concert held at the Lester Center last Friday. It was a memorable moment to watch my favorite singer live. The energy you bought to the stage was incredible, and I couldn't stopped myself from dancing and screaming in joy. Moreover, the small stories between the songs that you shared with us were motivational and relatable. I wish that night would never end.

I would like to tell you that I am also a singer and song writer. I have been singing my own songs since childhood. Even, I have received an award of the best performer in the college's youth festival lately. In addition, I have received an invitation from a music company to record a song with them. I am so excited for this opportunity.

Since I have been watching your tutorial videos on YouTube, I have started learning guitar. However your videos have help me a lot in learning the complex rule of guitar in simpler form, I have been struggling to play guitar in live concerts. I would appreciate it if you could help me in person to understand the adjustment of the instrument for the live stage, especially how to increase the volume while playing live.

I hope you consider my request favorably, and give me an appointment to join you to learn more about the instrument.

Yours sincerely,

PJ

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly express your feelings about the concert, provide relevant details about your own musical background, and make a specific request for help regarding live performance techniques. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer, and the purpose of the communication is clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the prompt. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your musical activities and the specific request for help is even more tightly integrated to demonstrate a more sophisticated level of task fulfillment.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'However' to link your sentences and paragraphs effectively. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from your experience at the concert to your own musical journey and finally to your request for assistance. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the message.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the context, such as 'motivational', 'relatable', and 'favourably'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'energy you bought' (should be 'brought') and 'complex rule' (should be 'rules'). However, these do not impede communication. You use some less common items effectively, which shows a good level of control. To improve further, focus on collocations and ensuring that word forms are used correctly in all instances to avoid minor inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures throughout the letter. While there are some grammatical errors, such as 'I couldn't stopped' (should be 'couldn't stop') and 'videos have help me' (should be 'helped'), the majority of your sentences are clear and error-free. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the errors present do not cause any confusion for the reader. To achieve a higher band, aim for more consistent control over verb tenses and ensure that complex structures are formed without minor slips.
