Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Ms Pooja,

I'm writing to express my extreme contentment after attending the latest music concert, where you graced the event with your performance.

I felt over cloud nine after hearing your songs in the event, and I believe your performance was not only exceptional but outstanding. I can't express my feelings in words that how ecstatic I felt that day.

I also have a growing passion in music and have participated in a few local music events in my vicinity. I'm a member of the local singing club and also motivate new participants to pursue their passion.

As I came to know that you provide online music lessons to students, I'd request you to kindly share the details on how I can join those classes to get formal training of music, which will assist me in satisfying my quest.

I look forward to hearing back from you soon!

Best wishes,

Rashpal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly expressed your feelings about the performance, described your musical background, and made a specific request for lessons. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, meeting the requirements of the task effectively. To reach a higher band, ensure that the details regarding your musical activities are slightly more descriptive to provide a more engaging narrative, but overall, the task is fully accomplished.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You have used appropriate paragraphing and basic cohesive devices such as 'I also' and 'As I came to know'. To improve, you could incorporate a wider range of linking words or transition phrases to connect your sentences more fluidly, as some transitions currently feel a bit mechanical. However, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a good range of vocabulary, such as 'extreme contentment', 'graced', 'exceptional', and 'ecstatic'. These choices demonstrate a good command of language. However, there are some minor collocation issues, such as 'over cloud nine' (the correct idiom is 'on cloud nine') and 'quest' (which is slightly misused in this context). While these errors do not impede communication, refining your use of idiomatic expressions and ensuring precise word choice will help you achieve a higher band. Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

Your grammar is generally accurate, and you have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. For example, 'I'm writing to express...' and 'As I came to know that you provide...' show good control. There are a few minor slips, such as 'in words that how ecstatic I felt' (which should be 'in words how ecstatic I felt') and 'training of music' (which is better phrased as 'musical training'). Despite these minor errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your meaning is always clear to the reader.
