Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Ms Pooja,

I'm writing to express my extreme contentment after attending the latest music concert, where you graced the event with your enchanting performance.

I felt on cloud nine after hearing your songs at the event, and I believe your performance was not only exceptional but outstanding. I can't express my feelings in words about how ecstatic I felt that day after witnessing your performance.

I also have a growing passion for music and have participated in a few local music events in my vicinity. I'm a member of the local singing club and also motivate new participants to pursue their passion.

As I came to know that you provide online music lessons to students, I'd request you to kindly share the details on how I can join those classes to get formal instruction in music, which will assist me in satisfying my desire to learn music.

I look forward to hearing back from you soon!

Best wishes,

Rashpal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly expressed your feelings about the performance, provided relevant details about your musical activities, and explained your request for help regarding online lessons. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed, and the letter follows the required structure, including the specified opening. You have fully met the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from your appreciation of the concert to your own musical background and finally to your request. You use cohesive devices such as 'I also', 'As I came to know', and 'which will assist me' effectively to link your sentences and ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the letter, making it easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using expressions like 'extreme contentment', 'graced the event', 'enchanting performance', and 'ecstatic'. These choices are generally natural and appropriate for the context. While some phrases like 'on cloud nine' are idiomatic, they fit the informal yet respectful tone of the letter. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation that impede communication, and you show an ability to use less common vocabulary effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

Your grammar is generally accurate, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use relative clauses ('where you graced...', 'which will assist me...') and conditional-like structures effectively. There are very few errors, and the punctuation is handled well. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout the text. The writing is clear and flows well without grammatical distractions.
