Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Ritviz,

I am writing this to inform you about your performance last night which I enjoyed a lot.

I really appreciate your music style and the way you perform at the stage. The lyrics of your songs are very deep in the meaning, it genuinely feels like someone is comforting my soul. And the latest hit of yours, "Barso" is at another level of craziness. I eagerly wait for your new song to come out and then I listen to that new music all the time in that day.

Meanwhile, I also practice singing and taking inspiration from you. I will become a great singer like you one day. However, if you can share the insights of your early stages of learning this art and all the struggles you have been through, would be greatly appreciated. I hope that is not much to ask as a fan.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours truly,

Maunil Oza

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points effectively. You clearly express your admiration for the performance, describe your own musical practice, and make a specific request for advice. The tone is appropriate for a fan writing to an artist. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'musical activities' bullet point; for instance, mentioning what instrument you play or what genre you focus on would provide more depth and make the letter feel more personal and engaging.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Meanwhile' and 'However' to transition between thoughts. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of linking words or phrases to connect sentences more fluidly, as some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You use a good range of vocabulary that is relevant to the topic, such as 'lyrics', 'inspiration', and 'insights'. The tone is natural and conveys your enthusiasm well. There are some minor collocations that could be improved, such as 'perform at the stage' (should be 'perform on stage') and 'deep in the meaning' (should be 'deep in meaning'). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise adjectives or idiomatic expressions would help elevate your writing to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good command of sentence structure, using a mix of simple and complex sentences. There are a few grammatical slips, such as 'the latest hit of yours... is at another level' and the sentence fragment 'would be greatly appreciated' in the third paragraph, which lacks a clear subject. Despite these minor errors, your meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and sentence completeness will help you achieve a higher score.
