Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well! I am writing this letter to express my love towards your singing skills. Me and my friends attend this concert in which lots of singers came than I told them I don't think so it will be worth it as I never went on these type of concerts but really it was so good that if there will be any show in future even anywhere in the world in which you will come I will definitely come.

I like to play the guitar even I won silver medal from singing on the state level. Therefore, you become great inspiration for me I learn lots of things from you in that concert. Currently, I am performing in the small cafes where people love me a lot.

I would really appreciate it if you will give me some guidance on music so I can improve my music skills. If you schedule allows you I can send you my audio clips as well.

I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Warm Regards,

Sukhan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: expressing your feelings about the performance, describing your musical background, and requesting guidance. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a performer. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention winning a medal, you could have provided more specific details about your musical style or the type of music you play to make the request for help more compelling. The letter covers the requirements, but the ideas could be expanded to show a more sophisticated engagement with the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'Therefore' and 'Currently'. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing, such as in the first paragraph where the transition between attending the concert and your initial skepticism is a bit disjointed. The use of referencing is sometimes unclear, and the overall progression could be smoother with a wider variety of linking words and better sentence-to-sentence connectivity.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'inspiration', 'guidance', and 'performance'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'attend this concert in which lots of singers came' (should be 'attended a concert where many singers performed') and 'won silver medal from singing' (should be 'won a silver medal for singing'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more specific musical terminology would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Issues include tense inconsistencies ('attend' instead of 'attended'), missing articles ('the state level'), and awkward sentence construction ('if there will be any show... I will definitely come'). Additionally, there are punctuation errors, such as the run-on sentence in the first paragraph. While these errors rarely prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they are frequent enough to keep the score in the 5.5 to 6.0 range.
