Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing regarding this concert, which I recently attended and enjoyed. I personally loved your performance, as I always have an interest in singing. I really love the way you describe the music in concert.
I have also been into singing since my childhood and my parents always encouraged me to sing and you have always been my inspiration. I devoted myself to your music. While I was at your performance I also clicked some pictures and videos. The way you carried the music was unbelievable, even I got goosebumps at the concert.
I would really happy if you could help me to get started from scratch and to complete my dream into reality. I just want you to listen my singing skills once. I have a good voice and I even win prices in my college.
I hope to hear from you soon
Kind regards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly express your admiration for the performance, describe your background in singing, and explain how you would like the singer to assist you. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the request for help is quite vague ('get started from scratch'), and the connection between your college achievements and the singer's potential mentorship could be more explicitly linked to show a clearer purpose. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a performer, though it leans slightly informal.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your message. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'While I was at...' and 'I have also been...', which provide a degree of flow. However, the transitions between sentences are sometimes mechanical or abrupt. For example, the jump from describing your parents' encouragement to mentioning photos taken at the concert lacks a smooth logical bridge. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would enhance the overall cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You use a range of vocabulary that is adequate for the task, such as 'inspiration', 'devoted', and 'unbelievable'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation that slightly hinder precision. For example, 'clicked some pictures' is not standard English (it should be 'took some pictures'), and 'complete my dream into reality' is an awkward phrasing. To reach a higher band, you should focus on more natural collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing like 'I really love' or 'I really happy'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'I would really happy' (missing verb 'be'), 'listen my singing skills' (missing preposition 'to'), and 'I even win prices' (incorrect tense/word choice; should be 'won prizes'). While these errors do not prevent the message from being understood, they indicate a lack of control over complex structures. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
