Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Jacob Collier,

I recently attended your concert, which was held at Scotia Arena Stadium. I am delighted to say that the concert was amazing and full of thrills and joy. I enjoyed it a lot, and the best part is that this was the first time I was with my whole friend circle, that make this show more memorable.

I also want to mention that when you started playing guitar along with the soft drum beats, which makes the song even more interesting, and seeing how talented and skilled you are which made the song more heart-touching and enjoyable. Apart from that, you always appear calm and humble to your fans, which I admire the most.

You are great inspiration and ideal to me. Currently, I am also taking guitar classes as a hobby, which I want to sharpen, and I want to be like you, a "Multi-Talented Instrument Player," the title given by people to you.

I would be glad to have an in-person meeting, and I want your advice to learn more in depth about skills and things that I can improve myself so that makes me more concert performer. Also, if possible, I would like to do at least one concert with you in the future.

Thank you, your beloved fan,

Pritesh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly expressed your feelings about the performance, provided details about your guitar hobby, and made a specific request for mentorship and a potential future collaboration. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer, maintaining a respectful and enthusiastic register throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your purpose for writing. To reach a higher band, ensure that your requests are framed with slightly more formal or nuanced language, as the current phrasing is a bit direct, though it remains perfectly functional for a General Training task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Apart from that' and 'Also' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing is always clear. For example, in the second paragraph, the sentence structure is slightly fragmented, which affects the smooth progression of ideas. Improving the use of transition signals would help the reader follow your train of thought more effortlessly, moving the response toward a more sophisticated level of cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'memorable', 'heart-touching', and 'multi-talented'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'that make this show' (should be 'which made') and 'sharpen' (which is slightly unnatural in the context of a hobby; 'refine' or 'improve' would be better). While you successfully communicate your meaning, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing when describing your admiration for the artist.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'which makes the song even more interesting' (a fragment) and 'that makes me more concert performer' (missing article and awkward phrasing). Subject-verb agreement and tense consistency are generally maintained, but the frequent minor errors in sentence construction prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence boundary control and ensuring that every clause has a clear subject and verb will significantly improve the accuracy and readability of your future writing.
