Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Hustinder,
I am writing this letter to congratulate and appreciate you for your concert in Winnipeg last week.
Actually it was my extreme desire to attend your live concert and I felt quite happy to attend your first show in Winnipeg. I knew your performance would be great but it was unexpectedly excellent. The songs you sang were the mixture of love, sadness and divinity which elevated the overall experience. The spectacle of your show is really unforgettable.
I would also like to share a little bit about my music interests. I love to play guitar whenever I get some time to do so. I had classes on playing guitar during my school time, so I practice that a lot so far and have a very good experience for that. I also participate in guitar competitions and have won numerous prizes for my musical activities.
Well, I watched all of you guitar videos and I must say that no one can perform better than you. So it is my dream to play guitar with you once in my life so that I can see how you play the instrument and get your advice on my performance.
I will look forward to hear from you and thank you for your consideration to this matter.
Kind Regards,
HK.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly express your admiration for the performance, provide relevant details about your musical background, and make a specific request for guidance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer, maintaining a polite and enthusiastic register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task, ensuring the reader understands your purpose immediately. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your musical activities and the request for help is slightly more nuanced, perhaps by specifying what particular techniques you hope to learn from him.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a single topic, which aids readability. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Actually', 'I would also like to', and 'So', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the concert experience to your own background and finally to your request. To improve, try to vary your linking words further to avoid repetitive sentence starters and ensure that the flow between sentences feels more natural and less formulaic.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'unexpectedly excellent', 'elevated the overall experience', and 'spectacle of your show' are well-chosen and effective. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'I practice that a lot so far' and 'have a very good experience for that', which sound slightly unnatural. While your vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise collocations and idiomatic expressions would help elevate your writing to a higher band. Focus on using words that sound more native-like in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I will look forward to hear from you' (should be 'hearing') and 'consideration to this matter' (should be 'for'). Additionally, 'I had classes on playing guitar during my school time' is slightly clunky. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. To improve, focus on verb patterns (e.g., 'look forward to + -ing') and preposition usage to ensure greater accuracy in your complex sentences.
