Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Benjamin,

I hope that you are doing well. I am writing this letter regarding your marvellous live perfomance at the Giliter night yesterday.

To begin with, your music directly connected to my heart and I was in another world when you played your the most famous album song, With You. In addition to that, when you started playing drums I felt like my sole left the body .

Not only I am fond of listening of your music creations but also a great drummer. I have been learning to play drums since I was five. Moreover, I also play a guitar so that I can one day play for your band. At the end, I usually practice on low intensity pitches due to this I believe if we get on we can compliement each other’s style.

I hope that I get a chance someday to be on stage with you and showcase my great musical skills.

Your sincerely

Deep Ukani

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly expressed your feelings about the performance, provided details about your musical background as a drummer and guitarist, and explained how you would like the singer to assist you. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer, and the purpose of the communication is clear throughout. To improve, you could provide more specific details about the 'musical activities' to make the letter feel more authentic and fully developed, as the current explanation of your practice routine is slightly vague.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In addition to that', and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is slightly abrupt. Additionally, the phrase 'At the end' is used incorrectly to introduce your final point; 'Finally' or 'Lastly' would be more appropriate. Paragraphing is used, but the flow between sentences could be improved by ensuring that the logical progression of ideas is smoother and less mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'marvellous', 'creations', and 'compliment'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'sole left the body' (should be 'soul left my body') and 'low intensity pitches'. There are also some spelling errors, such as 'perfomance' and 'Giliter'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they do indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of common English collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of your writing. For example, 'Not only I am fond of' should be 'Not only am I fond of', and 'your the most famous' contains an unnecessary article. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and preposition usage, such as 'listening of your music'. While your meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band score. Focusing on sentence structure and basic grammar rules will help improve your accuracy.
