Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Jas,

It was very delightful to watch you on stage, performing live concert in Toronto, last Sunday. What amazed me was the lyrics and the composition which was soulful and heart touching. It was a crazy performance and the way you presented on the stage was very eye-catching.

I am also a music artist, who plays guitar since last 20 years. I have worked with many artists and performed live concerts all over the world. Additionally, I own a youtube channel named - The GJ guitarist that has over 100 videos with more than 1 million followers.

I am writing this letter specifically to ask you if you could help me with a song on which I am currently working. I am having some difficulties with composition and some nodes of lyrics. It would be great if you could provide me feedback as a singer and direct me in a right direction.

Your sincerely,

Gurmeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter covers all three bullet points effectively. You clearly express your admiration for the performance, provide relevant details about your musical background, and make a specific request for assistance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer, maintaining a polite and appreciative register throughout. The ideas are well-developed, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific detail regarding the 'difficulties' you are facing with the composition to make the request feel more authentic and urgent.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on one of the required bullet points. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the concert experience to your own background and finally to the request for help. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'It would be great if', which help the flow. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be slightly more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'soulful', 'composition', and 'eye-catching'. These choices are appropriate for the context. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'performing live concert' (should be 'a live concert') and 'nodes of lyrics' (likely meant 'notes' or 'lines'). While these do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise collocation. Expanding your range to include more idiomatic expressions or nuanced adjectives would help elevate your score further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'who plays guitar since last 20 years' (should be 'has been playing the guitar for the last 20 years') and 'direct me in a right direction' (should be 'the right direction'). Additionally, 'Your sincerely' is a common error; it should be 'Yours sincerely'. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the errors do not significantly disrupt the reader's understanding of your message.
