Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Vishal,

I am writing to express my opinion related to a concert which I attended last week in my town.

During this musical event, I felt I was in the different world. I forgot all my worries and just indulged in your melodious voice while you were performing on the stage. To be honest, It was an unforgettable moment for me.

If I talk about myself, I must say that music is my passion. For this reason, I have learned it for the last few years. I have received a professional vocal training to uplift my skill. However, after listening you lively, I realized that I still need to work on my musical skill.

Fortunately, I came across you are coming in my music academy on 30th August. I am so excited to meet you. I would greatly appreciate if you help me to figure out my mistakes and share some necessary tips to improve my performance when I sing.

I look forward to hearing a positive response from you.

Yours sincerely,

Raj Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly express your admiration for the singer's performance, describe your background in vocal training, and explain your request for guidance during his upcoming visit. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a performer, and the purpose is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific details about your musical activities, such as the genre you focus on or specific challenges you face, to further develop the ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'For this reason' and 'However', to link your thoughts. To improve, ensure that transitions between sentences are smoother. For example, the shift from your personal musical background to the news about his visit could be bridged more naturally to enhance the flow of the narrative.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'indulged in your melodious voice' and 'unforgettable moment' are effective. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'listening you lively' (should be 'listening to you live') and 'received a professional vocal training' (should be 'received professional vocal training'). Expanding your use of more precise collocations would help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I felt I was in the different world' (should be 'a different world') and 'you are coming in my music academy' (should be 'you are coming to my music academy'). These errors are frequent enough to prevent a higher score, but they do not impede communication. Focusing on article usage and prepositional accuracy will improve your control.
