Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Karan Aujla,

I hope this email finds you well. I recently attended your concert and I am so impressed by your performance. Your energy was on fire and when you performed songs like “Winning Speech” , “softly” the entire audience was singling along. Your confidence and the way you performed was incredible. I have been following you when I heard your the most viral song “Mexico” because the music of this song took me to the another level.

I am also deeply involved in music. For the past two years I have been writing my own Punjabi songs. I practice singing everyday and produce beats on my laptop. I often post short covers and original tracks on Instagram and YouTube. Music is not only just hobby for me, It is one my dreams to perform on big stages one day, just like you.

I would extremely grateful if you could help me to improve. Could you please share some advice on how to write better lyrics and improve stage presence? I would also love an honest feedback on one of my songs if you ever have time.

Thank you for creating such powerful music. I hope you continue to inspire millions of fans like me.

Your sincerely,

Riya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly express your admiration for the singer's performance, provide relevant details about your own musical journey, and make a specific request for guidance. The tone is appropriate for a fan letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of the task. You have maintained a consistent and polite tone, which is essential for this type of correspondence. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific detail regarding the 'musical activities' to further demonstrate your commitment to the craft.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'For the past two years' and 'I would also love'. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. For instance, the transition between your musical activities and your request for help could be smoother. Overall, the structure is sound and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'deeply involved', 'original tracks', and 'stage presence'. These choices are appropriate for the context. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'singling along' (should be 'singing along') and 'one my dreams' (missing 'of'). Additionally, 'the music of this song took me to the another level' is slightly awkward phrasing. Despite these minor slips, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly and with some precision. Expanding your use of more sophisticated collocations would help elevate this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I would be extremely grateful if you could help me to improve'. While the majority of your sentences are clear, there are a few grammatical slips, such as 'I have been following you when I heard' (should be 'since I heard') and 'I would extremely grateful' (missing 'be'). Punctuation is generally correct, though there is a minor error in the sign-off ('Your sincerely' should be 'Yours sincerely'). These errors are non-systematic and do not impede communication, but they prevent the response from reaching the highest band.
